A shirt custom startup believes that it has found ways to customize clothing for people with artificial intelligence. Let users measure their size? No, OriginalStitch's new feature, Bodygram, uses computer vision to extract and reproduce the size of the user's favorite button-down shirt.

No longer afraid of hitting the shirt, this company uses AI to order exclusive clothes.

OriginalStitch was founded in 2015 and promises to get men to choose the ones that are unique to them. But the company's existing process requires customers to measure the size for themselves and then infer the size of the shirt based on their proportion.

According to Golden Heights, CEO of OriginalStitch, traditional methods of measuring body size can be problematic. Measuring errors and unsuitable shirts can make it a bad experience.

He said: "Those who have never tried to order a shirt don't like this shirt after trying it for the first time, because it feels too tight." "We found that men just want a match." Expected, tasteful shirt."

Both are the goals that OriginalStitch's Bodygram wants to achieve. The user puts the favorite shirt flat, puts a piece of paper on it, and then takes a photo with a smartphone, and the system can calculate the size of the clothes.

The company's goal is to make it easier for people to buy tailor-made shirts, which may make online shopping more valuable because they don't need to try on a pile of suitable shirts.

In fact, buying a shirt is expensive. OriginalStitch's cheapest models start at $50, and most shirts are sold for more than $80. If the customer picks the specified fabric for the shirt collar, cuffs and dunnage (this technical term refers to a piece of fabric that supports the button in the middle of the shirt), the price will increase.

According to Koh, only 3% of orders completed with Bodygram will pay off, and 23% of orders made with the original OriginalStitch system will pay off.

The machine model that supports Bodygram's production of men's shirts will also provide customers with more choices in the future. Koh showed some pictures of how the system is applied to other clothing, such as shoes and women's clothing. He does not believe that the company will enter the ranks of manufacturing these products, but it can be used as a market branch or as a technology supplier to another retailer.

Anyway, this is my idea. In my experience, the first run of this system is not as perfect as planned. During the interview, OriginalStitch promised to make a shirt for me to test the system. I chose my favorite button-down shirt (a shirt with a gray number I bought at H&M a few years ago), try to flatten it on my kitchen floor and put a piece of paper on it. Then took a photo.

At the moment, the company has not yet provided self-service measurement tools, so I sent a photo of the shirt to the team and they sent back the measurements from Bodygram. From this point of view, I could have taken out a tape measure and tested the results again, but I wanted to experience sending only photos without verifying the results.

My shirt (approximately 10 days later) is very beautiful. The fabric is light but not brittle, and it looks like I tried it in the store. Unfortunately, it is not appropriate. Although the rest of the clothes are perfect, the upper chest is too tight.

If the customer feels unsuitable after the first experience, OriginalStitch will redesign the shirt to make the one more suitable for the customer. If you have a small partner around you, you can enter the actual size, but you have to wait for the company to make this new shirt. Finally, the company's goal is to have a set of sufficiently accurate size standards that users can't find at a merchant's location—they only order shirts that are right for them.

I did not include feedback in it because I will donate this shirt according to VentureBeat's ethical policy. However, for those who are used to buying multiple such shirts, registering a detailed user profile seems to be a reliable option.

As for whether the clothes will shrink, I washed the shirt again and did not notice how much the change in my shirt compared to when I first got it. This may vary depending on the fabric you choose, but if I order it again from OriginalStitch, I won't care too much.

Speaking of ordering again, I have not decided whether to use these measurements to buy a shirt from the company. I don't need anything urgent yet, and the price is a bit high for me. Having said that, if I need to order something more personal in the market, I will give them another chance.
