In recent years, China’s textile research and development has attracted significant attention from scientific institutions, universities, and textile companies, showing a growing trend. New functional fabrics such as antibacterial, flame-retardant, waterproof breathable, oil-repellent, and mosquito-repelling materials have been continuously introduced. Research focuses on enhancing fabric functionality through new fiber materials, recycled fibers, and improved manufacturing processes. For example, knitted fabrics are widely used in sportswear, T-shirts, and undergarments due to their softness, stretchability, and breathability. However, their dimensional stability and shape retention after washing are generally worse than woven fabrics, which limits their performance. In 2009, Younger successfully completed a project to improve the liquid ammonia finishing process for high-value knitted fabrics, solving long-standing technical issues. This innovation enhanced fabric softness, luster, and comfort through advanced finishing techniques. Flame-retardant textiles are also a key area of R&D. Due to the flammability of most textiles, many countries have established regulations requiring flame-retardant properties in children's, elderly, and disabled clothing. Traditional brominated flame retardants are now being replaced by more environmentally friendly options, with a focus on halogen-free and eco-safe solutions. Functional textiles are expanding into fields like environmental protection, medical treatment, and nanotechnology. Innovations include electromagnetic radiation protection garments, outdoor sport textiles, natural dyes, silver-coated fibers, and medical compression socks. New fibers such as soft silk fiber, pearl fiber, and corn fiber are gaining popularity. Soft silk fiber, made from renewable plant-based proteins, offers excellent softness, UV protection, and far-infrared emission. Pearl fiber denim enhances skin care benefits, while corn fiber is biodegradable, comfortable, and eco-friendly. Recycled materials are also rising in popularity. Brands like H&M and Patagonia use recycled polyester from plastic bottles and old clothes. Japan’s ECO CIRCLE fabric, developed by Teijin, is an example of sustainable textile innovation. A global recycling standard (GRS) now classifies recycled products into gold, silver, and copper levels, helping consumers make informed choices. As the textile industry evolves, innovation in materials and sustainability will continue to shape the future of fashion. From functional fabrics to eco-conscious designs, the industry is moving toward a more responsible and dynamic direction.
