At the Haishang Summit on October 23rd, the Secretary-General addressed a gathering of hundreds of prominent domestic media outlets at the Shanghai International Fashion Industry Center, where they attended the closing event of Shanghai Fashion Week. During the summit, he met with Mr. Shi Shiping, Deputy Director and Secretary-General of the Shanghai Fashion Week Organizing Committee, to discuss the development of the event and the vision for Shanghai to become a global fashion capital.
Over the past eight years, Shanghai Fashion Week has undergone significant changes. Initially, Fuxing Park was the sole main venue, with only five or six brands participating. The seasonal releases were quite different from the international schedule, which typically follows a spring/autumn cycle. In 2007, Shanghai successfully integrated with the international fashion calendar, launching trend presentations in both the first and second quarters of the year. Participation has also grown substantially, with this year seeing over 30 brands, 40 designers, and more than 100 media representatives. This expansion reflects a major transformation. Additionally, the city’s image and infrastructure have improved, with international organizations like the United Nations’ South-South Cooperation Organization and the World Fashion Organization joining this year—another sign of progress.
When the Haishang Summit was held in 2008, organizers invited representatives from Paris and London Fashion Weeks to share insights on operations and future directions. At that time, many believed Shanghai Fashion Week was still immature compared to its long-established counterparts. However, after observing the event, international professionals noted that Shanghai had already made impressive strides. Today, Shanghai is recognized as one of the six major fashion weeks globally, and the gap continues to narrow. The goal is to eventually compete with Tokyo in the coming years.
The decision to unite with fashion media for the summit during the event was driven by the recognition of media’s powerful influence. Both traditional and digital media play a crucial role in amplifying the event’s reach. Without media coverage, the impact of the event would be limited. Yet, the aim is not just to create a platform for a select few but to involve broader audiences, allowing media power to grow. This synergy between fashion media and Fashion Week is mutually beneficial, with media helping to drive the industry forward.
In the post-World Expo era, Shanghai aims to leverage its strengths to build itself into a global fashion capital. With the focus on high-tech industries and creative cultural sectors, the fashion industry is gaining increasing attention. As urbanization accelerates, demand for textiles and apparel in China is expected to rise rapidly. This creates a solid foundation for growth. Moreover, with Shanghai's per capita GDP reaching $10,000 and per capita consumption surpassing $3,000, there is greater consumer interest in fashion. This shift in mindset opens new opportunities for the industry to meet individualized demands.
As a key platform for showcasing fashion, Shanghai Fashion Week can attract global attention to Chinese talent and help drive the industry forward. The recent collaboration between the Shanghai Garment Industry Association (SGTA) and the World Fashion Organisation (WFO) marks an important step. Through this partnership, Shanghai Fashion Week will promote its brands, designers, and models to an international audience. WFO will also introduce top global talents to participate in SGTA events, while SGTA will showcase Chinese designers on global stages. Additionally, the "HaiShang Summit" will hold themed discussions every two years, inviting leading figures from the global fashion industry. These exchanges and collaborations are set to inspire those who follow Shanghai Fashion Week, both inside and outside the industry.
