Israeli soldiers, prisoners and prison guards will no longer wear uniforms imported from China
At a recent hearing on December 23, it was revealed that Israeli textile factories will be granted preferential treatment in future defense system bids, even if their prices are 50% higher than those of international competitors. MK Yacimovich, a member of the Knesset, announced that she will no longer support the import of uniforms from China, signaling a shift in national policy toward domestic production.
Under the proposed legislation, Israel’s security forces and the Ministry of the Interior will prioritize local textile manufacturers when purchasing clothing for the IDF, military units, and prison guards. The bill, introduced by Shelly Yacimovich, who is responsible for labor-related issues, has already passed its second and third readings in the Constitution, Law, and Justice Committee.
The core of the bill stipulates that Israeli textile companies will be given priority in defense contracts, regardless of price differences. This initiative is part of the "National Self-Esteem Act," which mandates that national symbols such as flags and uniforms must be produced within Israel.
Parliamentarians have pushed for an end to foreign production of these national items, and the proposal covers a wide range of products, including clothing, uniforms, and even tents. The bill is expected to receive final approval from the Knesset in the coming days, after which the necessary regulations will be submitted for review.
Yacimovich has been advocating for this bill for nearly four years. Earlier versions were passed in previous Knesset sessions, with 60 votes in favor. Since then, she has engaged in extensive discussions with government officials and industry representatives to ensure clear interpretations of the law and the development of supporting regulations.
On Sunday, Yacimovich confirmed that the agreement details have been finalized and are expected to be approved within the next few weeks. Once implemented, the law will immediately prioritize Israeli textile factories in defense procurement, protecting thousands of jobs and potentially creating new employment opportunities.
She emphasized that soldiers, prisoners, and prison guards will no longer wear uniforms sourced from China, reinforcing the nation’s commitment to self-reliance and national pride. This move reflects a broader effort to strengthen domestic industries while ensuring the integrity of national symbols.
