Hey everyone! Today, we're thrilled to share an update from our beloved friend, Flat S. Last time we heard from her, she was chilling in the Netherlands. But now, she’s sending us postcards from Ghent, Belgium, where she’s been soaking up some quality time with Nele and her family. If you’re familiar with Nele’s work, you’ll know she’s no stranger to this space—she’s previously shared awesome tutorials like the Scalloped Yoke School Photo Dress and Adding Bows to Welt Pockets. And here’s Nele stepping in to tell us all about Flat S’s visit.
After her epic journey from Australia to the Netherlands, and surviving the thrilling experience at customs, Flat S decided to slow things down a bit. So, she hopped on a train from Eindhoven to Ghent—a journey that only takes about three hours. Thankfully, she’s feeling much better now and ready to explore. We were super excited when Flat S agreed to stay with us, because Ghent is such a gem, and we couldn’t wait to show her around.

The weekend she arrived, we took her on a delightful stroll through the old city center. It just so happened to be the first weekend of the Ghent Festival of Flanders, which made Korenlei and Graslei look extra special with the additional pontoons and the stage set up over the river.

We stumbled upon two of the six pianos part of the musical project 123-piano and even met two vibrant seamstresses cycling through the streets.

Flat S absolutely adored the medieval charm of the city center, with its intricate waterways, ancient houses, and cobblestone streets.

Fun fact: Ghent is also a fantastic spot for those perfect #doorphotobombs!

Ghent boasts a plethora of stunning museums, but with limited time, we had to make a choice. Since there was a fantastic exhibition on, we opted for the Design Museum. Titled Rechts/Averechts (Plain/Purl), the exhibition celebrated ten years of Textile Design at KASK / School of Arts. Truly inspiring stuff!

Another day, we cycled around the historic docks of Ghent, which are currently undergoing a massive transformation into a brand-new urban district. On the day of our bike tour, the docks were hosting the street art festival SORRY, NOT SORRY. The weather was perfect, and we had a blast.

Before Flat S set off for her next adventure, we took her to Bruges. A quick 30-minute train ride from Ghent brought us there. Coincidentally, it was my grandmother’s 97th birthday that weekend, and we stopped by to celebrate. She used to be a seamstress before retiring, and my late grandfather was a tailor. We showed Flat S the old atelier where they both spent countless hours working.

After visiting my grandmother, we strolled through the medieval heart of Bruges back to the train station. Flat S was captivated by the 'Brugse Reien' (canals), charming streets, historic homes, breathtaking views, and the romantic Minnewater.
We hope Flat S loved her stay in Ghent. It was a joy having her with us, and we’re eagerly looking forward to hearing about her future travels. Hopefully, she’ll come back soon so we can introduce her to Antwerp, Brussels, and many more hidden gems in Ghent.
Thank you, Nele! Any guesses on where Flat S might head next? As always, we’re curious to see where her journey takes her! Safe travels, Flat S!
