Welcome back to another installment of our global fabric shopping series! Today, we’re thrilled to have Sandi join us again. Sandi, who you may remember from her earlier post on the Building Block Dress, is here to take us on a virtual tour of San Diego's vibrant fabric scene. If you're a fan of her podcast, *Crafty Planner*, you might recall that Liesl was a guest on one of her episodes. You can revisit that conversation anytime. Thank you so much for sharing your insights, Sandi!
One thing you’ll quickly realize when traveling abroad to shop for fabric is that sewing terminology doesn't always translate smoothly. To help you navigate this challenge, we’ve developed the Sewing Translator, a resource that many of our readers have found incredibly helpful. Available in 14 languages, it’s even downloadable as an iOS app for offline use. Whether you’re a seasoned traveler or just starting to explore international fabric markets, we hope this tool proves useful. Find it for free in the Apple App Store.

Now, let’s dive into San Diego! Known fondly as “America’s Finest City,†San Diego is the eighth-largest city in the U.S., home to attractions like LEGOLAND, the San Diego Zoo, the USS Midway, and Balboa Park. Having lived here for over a decade, I’ve had the chance to explore most of the local fabric shops. Since San Diego sprawls across a large area and public transportation isn’t always ideal for cross-county trips, I’ve categorized the stores based on their geographic locations.
### **North San Diego**
First up is *Quilt in a Day*, the official store of Eleanor Burns, the host of the popular TV show *Quilt in a Day*. Nestled in an industrial park, this shop is packed with quilting cottons, notions, patterns, and books. It also serves as the meeting spot for the San Diego Modern Quilt Guild.

---
### **Central San Diego**
Next, we head to *Rosie’s Calico Cupboard*, one of the first fabric shops I visited when I moved to San Diego. This place is an explosion of colors, with separate rooms for minky/flannel, notions, Asian-inspired cottons, magazines/books, and modern/solid fabrics. The main room features a massive color wall of quilting cottons. You can also dig through the "button chest" for endless possibilities and explore their range of Janome sewing machines.

If you're in the mood for something delicious nearby, I highly recommend checking out *D.Z. Akin’s Deli*. Established in 1980, this deli offers an impressive selection of pastries, fresh-made pickles, and a variety of sandwiches. My personal favorite? Matzo ball soup!
Also located centrally is *Cozy Creative Center* (previously *Cozy Quilt Shop*), a dealer for Bernina and Brother sewing machines. Spanning over 4,500 square feet, this store boasts an extensive collection of batik fabrics, a color-coded wall for quilting cottons, and ample space to test out their machines.

---
### **South San Diego**
Heading south, we arrive at *Yardage Town*, a chain with seven locally owned stores. Here, you'll find a vast array of garment fabrics, notions, and a section dedicated to second-hand sewing machines. The fabrics are categorized by substrate type, and there’s a bargain area at the back. Their trim selection is top-notch, and their sales are often unbeatable.

For those who enjoy thrifting, the *National City Swap Meet* is a must-visit. Renowned for its garment fabrics, most vendors source their stock from the Los Angeles Garment District. While language might occasionally pose a challenge, asking questions usually yields helpful answers.
If you're more interested in textile art, don’t miss the *Visions Art Museum* in Liberty Station, a former Navy training center. The museum showcases stunning exhibitions.

And finally, no trip to San Diego is complete without indulging in its culinary delights and craft beer scene. From Mexican taco joints like *Lolita’s*, *Lucha Libre*, and *El Indio*, to seafood markets such as *Blue Water Seafood Market* and *Point Loma Seafood*, there’s something for everyone. As for breweries, Stone reigns supreme, but don’t overlook *Modern Times*, *Ballast Point*, and *Green Flash*. They’re all worth a visit.
I hope you enjoy exploring San Diego’s fabric treasures and beyond. Let me know if you discover any hidden gems—your recommendations are always welcome!
