The best part—and sometimes the most frustrating—about sewing for our kids is that they grow so quickly! It's exciting because it gives us endless opportunities to create something new for them, but it can also be challenging when their growth spurt means outgrowing handmade clothes faster than anticipated. It feels like their little legs gain inches overnight, and keeping up with their wardrobe becomes a full-time job. Today, I want to share a dream project that many sewing mamas might relate to. If I had unlimited time, fabric, and access to Oliver + S patterns, what would I make for my three kids? It’s both thrilling and slightly daunting, but here goes! For my six-year-old daughter, I would dive into some timeless favorites while mixing in a few modern twists. One of her absolute favorites is the sleeveless Playtime Dress with a hi-low hem. I previously made this dress for her, and she immediately dubbed it her "Elsa Dress." While she adores it, it's mostly reserved for dress-up sessions. To create a more practical version for summer, I'd opt for a contemporary cotton + steel peridot solid bodice paired with a moonlit butterflies-inspired skirt. Cherie has a fantastic tutorial for making the dress sleeveless, and I love how the Playtime pattern naturally offers a cap sleeve. I'd keep the length as is and embrace the playful hi-low hemline. Another must-have for her would be the Roller Skate Dress. She frequently reaches for this style, but the original one is starting to feel a bit snug. The Roller Skate pattern is perfect for showcasing bold fabrics, like this sparkly metallic border print by Melody Miller. It’s eye-catching and adds a touch of whimsy to any outfit. For mix-and-match versatility, I’d also craft a Swingset Tunic paired with Class Picnic Shorts. As she grows older, she’s becoming more interested in creating her own outfits, and these pieces allow for endless combinations. For the tunic, I’d use a pretty Bari J voile fabric in a soft pastel hue, paired with mauve cotton couture flat piping and straps. The shorts would feature a stretch chambray material that ensures comfort without sacrificing style. Turning to my 3.5-year-old son, his wardrobe is dominated by tees and shorts. He's developed a strong preference for casual, easy-to-wear options, which makes sense given his age. To build on his growing collection, I’d aim for a gray striped School Bus Tee, perhaps adorned with a freezer paper stencil graphic for added flair. Accompanying this, I’d create a pair of Sketchbook Shorts in pumpkin chambray, offering a classic yet playful look. Lastly, for my six-month-old baby boy, who is still enjoying hand-me-downs from his siblings, I’d focus on creating a few summer essentials. Despite his rapid growth, I’ve noticed he’s lacking some lightweight summer pieces. A little romper made from the Lullaby Layette pattern would be ideal. I’d choose an adorable organic elephant knit fabric paired with a bright yellow binding for a pop of color. Interestingly, since sending this list to Liesl for the graphics, I've already completed two projects featured here using the exact fabrics mentioned! One is already shared, and the other will follow later this week over at Skirt as Top. Can you guess what I made? No peeking! As an aside, I’ve come to realize that sewing for children isn’t just about creating clothes—it’s about capturing moments, personalizing their styles, and building memories. Whether it’s a princess-inspired dress or a cozy romper, each piece tells a story. And while the process can be time-consuming, the joy of seeing my kids wear something I created with love makes it all worthwhile. So, what did I sew? Stay tuned to find out!
