Today we’re thrilled to share an update from our dear friend, Flat S. Last we heard, she was exploring The Netherlands. Now, she’s writing to us from Ghent, Belgium, where she's been staying with Nele and her family. Nele is no stranger to this space—she’s previously shared fantastic tutorials like the Scalloped Yoke School Photo Dress and Adding Bows to Welt Pockets. Nele is here to tell us all about Flat S’s visit and the adventures they shared.
Following her recent travels from Australia to the Netherlands, Flat S decided to slow things down a bit after her initial journey. She hopped on the train from Eindhoven to Ghent, a trip that took just three hours. Happily, she was feeling well enough to dive into some serious sightseeing. We were delighted when Flat S agreed to stay with us because we adore our city and couldn’t wait to show her around.
The weekend she arrived, we took Flat S for a stroll through the historic city center. It happened to coincide with the first weekend of the Ghent Festival of Flanders, which transformed our Korenlei and Graslei into something truly special, complete with extra pontoons and a stage set up over the river.
During our exploration, we stumbled upon two of the six pianos part of the 123-piano music project and met two vibrant seamstresses riding their bikes.
Flat S was captivated by the medieval charm of Ghent—its waterways, ancient homes, and cobblestone streets. Did you know Ghent is also a prime spot for a #doorphotobomb?
With so many museums in Ghent, we had to make a choice due to time constraints. An exciting exhibition was running at the time, so we opted for the Design Museum. The exhibition, titled Rechts/Averechts (Plain/Purl), celebrated ten years of Textile Design at KASK / School of Arts. It was incredibly inspiring!
Another day, we took Flat S on a bike ride around the old docks of Ghent. This area is currently undergoing transformation and will soon become a bustling new urban district. On the day of the bike tour, the old docks were hosting the street art festival SORRY, NOT SORRY. The weather cooperated, and we had a fantastic time exploring the vibrant street art.
Before Flat S continued her journey elsewhere, we took her to Bruges. A short 30-minute train ride from Ghent brought us to this charming city. My grandmother, who resides in Bruges, celebrated her 97th birthday that weekend, and we visited her. She used to work as a seamstress before retiring, and my grandfather, a tailor who passed away 15 years ago, also worked in the same field. We were able to show Flat S the old atelier where they both spent their professional lives.
After visiting my grandmother, we strolled through Bruges’ medieval city center back to the train station. Flat S was mesmerized by the Brugse Reien (canals), quaint streets, historical homes, breathtaking views, and the romantic Minnewater.
We hope Flat S thoroughly enjoyed her time in Ghent. We were thrilled to host her and look forward to hearing about more of her global adventures. We hope she returns so we can introduce her to Antwerp, Brussels, and even more delightful spots in Ghent.
Thank you, Nele! Any guesses where Flat S might head next? As always, we’re eager to follow her travels! Safe travels, Flat S!
