Welcome back to another installment of our global fabric shopping series! Today, we’re thrilled to feature Sandi, who previously graced our blog with her insightful post on the Building Block Dress. Sandi hosts the popular podcast *Crafty Planner*, where Liesl was recently interviewed. If you haven’t already, check out her podcast episode—it’s a great listen! Sandi is now sharing her expertise on fabric shopping in San Diego, California. Thank you so much for joining us today, Sandi! When you're shopping for fabric in a foreign country, it's common to encounter unfamiliar terms that don’t translate easily. To help you navigate, we’ve developed the *Sewing Translator*, which many of you have found incredibly useful. It’s now available in 14 languages, and if you own an iPhone or iPad, you can even download the native iOS app for offline use. We hope this tool will be just as helpful to you as you explore fabric stores around the world. You can find the Sewing Translator in the Apple App Store—it’s completely free! --- **San Diego Fabric Shopping Guide** San Diego, known as “America’s Finest City,” is the eighth-largest city in the United States and home to attractions like LEGOLAND, the San Diego Zoo, the USS Midway, and Balboa Park. Having lived here for over a decade, I’ve had the chance to visit most of the local fabric stores. Since San Diego is a sprawling city with limited public transportation options, I’ve categorized the shops by their geographic location. --- **North San Diego** *Quilt in a Day* is the flagship store for Eleanor Burns, the host of the popular TV show *Quilt in a Day*. Located in an industrial park, the store is packed with quilting cottons, notions, patterns, and books. It also serves as the meeting place for the San Diego Modern Quilt Guild. ![Quilt in a Day](https://via.placeholder.com/760x1013) If you’re looking for a bite to eat nearby, *D.Z. Akin’s Deli* is a must-visit. Established in 1980, this deli offers a variety of fresh-made sandwiches, pastries, and pickles. My personal favorite? Their matzo ball soup—it’s heavenly! --- **Central San Diego** One of the first fabric stores I explored when moving to San Diego was *Rosie’s Calico Cupboard*. This vibrant shop is a kaleidoscope of colors, with sections dedicated to minky/flannel, notions, Asian-inspired cottons, magazines, books, and modern/solid fabrics. The main room features a massive color wall of quilting cottons, while the “button chest” offers endless possibilities for embellishments. You can also test out their selection of Janome sewing machines. ![Rosie’s Calico Cupboard](https://via.placeholder.com/760x570) For those who need a break from shopping, head over to *D.Z. Akin’s Deli* again for a delicious meal. Trust me—your taste buds will thank you! A bit further north, you’ll find *Cozy Creative Center*, formerly known as *Cozy Quilt Shop*. As a Bernina and Brother sewing machine dealer, they boast over 4,500 square feet of space, featuring an impressive collection of batiks, a color-coded quilting cotton section, and ample room to try out their machines. ![Cozy Creative Center](https://via.placeholder.com/760x514) --- **South San Diego** For those south of the city, *Yardage Town* is a treasure trove of garment fabrics, notions, and second-hand sewing machines. The store organizes its fabrics by substrate type, and there’s even a bargain section at the back. Their trim selection is top-notch, and their sales are often unbeatable. ![Yardage Town](https://via.placeholder.com/760x463) If you’re visiting during the weekend, don’t miss the *National City Swap Meet*. While it may seem daunting at first, this market is renowned for its selection of garment fabrics. Many vendors source their stock from the Los Angeles Garment District, bringing unique finds to the southern end of the state. Language barriers might arise, but asking questions usually yields helpful answers. --- **Other Recommendations** For those interested in textile art, the *Visions Art Museum* at Liberty Station is a hidden gem. Housed in a former Navy Training Center, the museum showcases stunning exhibitions that blend art and craftsmanship. No trip to San Diego would be complete without indulging in its culinary delights. From authentic Mexican taco shops like *Lolita’s*, *Lucha Libre*, and *El Indio*, to fresh seafood from *Blue Water Seafood Market* and *Point Loma Seafood*, there’s something for everyone. And of course, no visit is complete without sampling the local craft beer scene. *Stone Brewing* is a household name, but don’t overlook *Modern Times*, *Ballast Point*, and *Green Flash*—all offer incredible brews. --- I hope this guide helps you make the most of your San Diego fabric shopping adventure. Let me know if you discover any hidden gems—I’d love to hear about them! Happy stitching, and happy travels. P.S. If you enjoyed this post, feel free to share it with fellow fabric enthusiasts. Until next time, happy crafting!
