She’s graciously agreed to share some insights into her adorable fit-and-flare dress she crafted for herself.   Name: Sarah Anderson Project Details: Did the fabric work well? Absolutely! Initially, I hadn’t considered underlining the fabric, but its transparency became apparent when I held it up to the light. Since I prefer not to wear slips during warmer months, I decided to add the batiste lining. I’m thrilled I made that choice—it gave the dress both structure and comfort without compromising the flowy aesthetic. How did the sewing process go? To start, I cut out a size 12 based on my usual measurements. My mom had already made a size 14, which I tried on afterward, and it was surprisingly roomy. Surprisingly, though, the size 12 ended up being too snug for me. I’ve still got some lingering weight from my pregnancy last year, so I wasn’t surprised. After some adjustments—taking out the back darts and widening the side seams by about half an inch—I achieved a perfect fit. I aimed for a tailored bodice, and the final outcome was exactly what I had hoped for! What was your favorite part? I had envisioned this dress as a summery white piece that would pair beautifully with my tanned skin and dark hair. Midway through construction, I began to worry that it might resemble an outdated nurse’s uniform. Thankfully, once I hemmed it, I realized my vision had come true—the dress looked exactly as I imagined, and it most certainly didn’t resemble anything hospital-related! The best part was seeing the final product match my expectations. I often find that my best sewing projects happen when I have a clear mental image of what I want to create.
