This past week, we discussed donating Popover Sundresses to a good cause. Whether you're planning to sew one for charity or not, I've gathered plenty of creative ideas and examples to spark your imagination.

For those unfamiliar with the Popover Sundress, it's an A-line dress for girls featuring a contrasting yoke and bias ties at the shoulders. Available in sizes 2-8, it doesn't require elastic, buttons, or zippers since the dress has tie shoulder straps. It can even be made fully reversible! And guess what? The pattern is free!

Once the fabric is cut out, it’s quick to sew, making it a fantastic instant gratification project. Beginners will find it a perfect first dress-making project. If you prefer learning through videos, Liesl offers a Creativebug workshop where you can sew along with her.

The Popover Sundress is my all-time favorite Oliver + S pattern to sew! Recently, I sewed several of them and experimented with different styles. Much of the fabric I used came from my stash. While rummaging through it, I found leftover fabric with pintucks from a previous project—a pink cotton piece that was just enough for a yoke. It added some visual texture and interest while looking absolutely charming.

I adore sewing with bias tape, and these sundresses look stunning with bias binding on the hem.

Adding Oliver + S pockets is another fun idea. I used size 18-24M pockets from the Lullaby Layette and placed them on size 2 dresses.

Here’s a version featuring the takeout box-shaped pockets from the Hopscotch Skirt.

For this dress, I used scenic fabric and wanted to keep the pretty print visible, so I opted for on-seam side pockets from the Playtime Dress.

These dresses below showcase gathered rounded pockets inspired by the Jump Rope Dress and Puppet Show Shorts.

For this dress, I incorporated the pockets from the Ice Cream Dress.

Lastly, square patch pockets from the Jump Rope Dress.

If you're a quilter, you likely have fat quarters (18" x 22" pieces of fabric) on hand. I discovered that a size 2 dress can be made using just two fat quarters. Interestingly, I’ve managed to squeeze a size 5 dress out of 2/3 yard of fabric and a size 8 from one full yard.

Here are some online examples. Janice crafted a striking version with a dog appliqué.

Terra sewed hers with colored decorative rows of stitching.

Nienke embroidered the yoke of this monochromatic dress in a lovely blue.

Finally, Kathy transformed an old onesie into a baby version of the Popover Sundress—so adorable!

So, how are you planning to sew your next Popover Sundress? We’d love to see photos of your Oliver + S creations. Don’t forget the Flickr group where you can share your projects with other enthusiastic seamstresses. And if you’re on Instagram, tag your photos with #oliverands.
